Olomouc, CZ

On Friday, Aug. 22nd, we all began our day at 6:30 a.m. to catch the bus and travel together to the city of Olomouc in the Czech Republic:


 
There, we visited the Centre of Plant Structural and Functional Genomics, greeted by Roman Hobza who was our guide in Olomouc for the day.  Also greeting us were Jan Bartos, Hana Simkova, and Jana Dostolova, who (like Roman) are affiliated with the Centre conducting different types of plant experiments:

 




Jan and Hana each presented a lecture to the students relating to the wheat genome studies that made this Centre famous and the leader in this particular field:


 
Afterwards, the students were taken on a tour through the Centre’s labs and greenhouses:










 
After spending the morning at the Centre, we went to the center of Olomouc, a beautiful old city, where we all ate lunch and the students went on a city walking tour to see the sites, including where Mendel studied when he was in Olomouc, before we caught our bus back to Vienna, Austria:
